SMARTER BALANCED TESTING MARCH-MAY

Washington State's new Common Core college-readiness standards have resulted in a new state test which is being given for the first time to CSIHS students this Spring.  This test is the Smarter Balanced Assessment, which will be given to students in more than 20 states starting this year.  The test is given in two subjects - English Language Arts (ELA) and Math.  Each test has a Computer-Adaptive test component, as well as a Performance Task, which is compised of document-based questions and an essay for ELA and a long-form, multi-problem scenario for Math.

GRADE 10 - Students will be taking the ELA test only in the Language Arts classes on May 19, 20, and 21 during a morning testing window.  This test replaces the HSPE exam in meeting state testing graduation requirements for Reading and Writing.  The score required for graduation will be set by the state this summer.

GRADE 11 -  Students will be taking the ELA test in Language Arts classes in April and the Math test in May during the May 19, 20, 21 testing window.   Students passing these exams will be able to earn credit-bearing coursework in Washington's college and university system without any remedial coursework or any additional placement exams such as the COMPASS test.

PRACTICE TEST:  We encourage all students and families of our 10th and 11th grade students to try out the Smarter Balanced practice test available online here to help them prepare for testing.

RESOURCES:  More information on the Common Core standards and the new tests can be found in this link from the state government, this other link from the Ready WA Coalition and another link from Seattle Public Schools.

If you have any questions on state testing, please contact
Lori Douglas, Academic Dean, at (206) 252-8573 or via e-mail at ltdouglas@seattleschools.org.

Ideas for projects the district should fund with the 2016 Capital Levy?
Seattle Public Schools’ Buildings, Technology and Athletics/Academics (BTA IV) 2016 Capital Levy will be submitted to Seattle voters in Feb. 2016. This levy will replace the expiring BTA III Capital Levy, passed by Seattle Voters in 2010. It will provide funds for upgrades and renovations of our aging school facilities on a planned and predictable timeline to help ensure a safe, secure teaching and learning environment.

We would like your input regarding possible projects that may be included in this capital levy. We will collect, record and consider your nomination. The deadline for submitting your nomination is April 30, 2015.
